McAlester’s $10,000 Christmas Giveaway is a shop-local drawing that has run for around thirty years. It was started by a group of business owners as the McAlester Christmas Promotion, a non-profit with no connection to the city.
Shopping at a participating business earns you a free ticket, and another for every $10 you spend, up to a hundred and one tickets in total. More than eighty businesses across the McAlester area take part, and smaller prizes are drawn in the run-up to the $10,000.
The final drawing happens on a stage at Second Street and Choctaw Avenue, which is in the district. If your number is called you have five minutes to reach the stage, however you happen to be watching, so it is worth being nearby. It is livestreamed as well.
